The city I live in NOW

Instead of talking about the small space where I am, I prefer to describe the whole city I live in/

Since the epidemic happening right now, I went back to my father's hometown getting back with my parents. It is a secondary city in the middle area of China, Zhengzhou, where my father was born and raised. My memory of this city is all about my grandparents, the smells of street food, people speaking the dialect I can barely understand, and the sunshine in winter. This city was near the capital of ancient China for 8 dynasties, it used to be a city full of history (Where Shaolin Temple in). But everything has changed now, it becomes just another basic modern city in China. People tear down old buildings and build up new skyscrapers and fancy office buildings.

Then my father shows me some photographs of Zhengzhou during the time he was young. The city has lost its soul.

Past and Present

Space Changes

I am thinking, what has changed exactly? Is it space or the subject of the space?

When I stand in the balcony staring at the city's night view, my father tells me it used to be field. I can imagine how farmers work here. Where did these farmers go? I don't know. Maybe they became "citizens". And they get higher life quality. I am so sick about this boring view in every modern city, maybe because I spend most of my time in cities like this. I know I can't be so selfish to stop the development of these. And I haven't really been through the time I "miss", just like people in my age miss how wonderful the 1980s is.
