The structure of the future

This sculpture was started to made during 1974, but was left unfinished after the outbreak of civil war. It remains me of the old building in HongKong made from 1970s to 1990s. Because the limited of space and overpopulation issue. The government had to build tall and crowed building, so it would be use less space for more people as soon as possible. The old apartment of my uncle which was born and raised in HongKong, he still lived there in 2000 year till he die in Shanghai. The only thing I can remember of that old and crowed building was like a maze, and the creepy elevator which didn't even have a door is my nightmare in childhood.

After he was gone, the apartment was rented for the poor illegally immigrations and people from poor area have ambitions working hard and hope that one day they can own their own apartment in this big fancy city. Nowadays, we moved to brand new fancy apartment, but the last memory about home is the cold and crowded building for my uncle. So in the concept of cyberpunk's future world, though the technology develop a lot but the poor people still can't get the benefit of it, since the world (or even the entire country) would be controlling by the rich guys. It is kind of like what happened in HongKong from the last century, till now. I guess that is the reason why all cyberpunk cities are like HongKong.

This sculpture is cold, crowded and boring, just like the poor people be like everyday. Also it can be seen in a lot of cyberpunk illustration or photographs that buildings are crowed and have a lot of layers of these. Or it can be said that overpopulation and layered structure would be trending of the future world.
